FRIDAY February 21 (9:30 am to 4:00 pm)
$130.00
Suitable for intermediate and advanced artists
Jane Hall works primarily with an assortment of brushes and pallet knives to apply thick, lush oil paints to a black canvas, resulting in paintings with rich textures and brilliant colours that bring her vision of the natural world to life.
Jane invites the viewer to enter her paintings, to smell the trees and hear the water moving, to feel the wind brushing against their face, to return to moments of beauty and tranquility helping them reconnect with nature, taking them back to special a moment or pleasant memory.
Description:
In this class we will be painting on BLACK canvases. Please prepare your canvas in advance with black gesso or black acrylic paint. A reference photo will be supplied in advance and we will discuss the colour palette and different aspects of landscape design. Demonstration and critiques will be ongoing as paintings are worked on.
Come with all your supplies and your black canvas. I encourage you to do a simple sketch of your own. It really helps you become familiar with the subject before we start.
In the morning, we will begin by sketching in orange on the black canvas and then paint with the lightest values. In afternoon we will continue moving into mid and darker values.
Supplies
Canvases:
A rectangular canvas (16” x 20”, 18” x 24”, 20” x 24”, etc.). Choose a size that you can comfortably finish in one day.
Palette:
A reusable or disposable palette to lay out paint on. I also use a small palette for mixing paint.
Brushes:
An assortment of brush sizes. I use Brights, #4, # 6, #8, but bring whatever you have. I also use a rigger size #1 or #2 from time to time. I find the larger my canvas the larger I like my brushes (e.g., #10). A smaller, older brush works well for sketching on.
Paints:
Blue -- French Ultra Marine, Cerulean Blue
Red – Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red
Yellow – Cadmium yellow pale, Cadmium yellow medium, Yellow ochre
Orange – Cadmium orange, Burnt sienna, Raw sienna
Titanium White (a large tube)
Other:
Odourless mineral spirits (if painting in oils), baby oil, container for water (if painting in acrylics), paper towels, rags, Sketch book, felt pen or pencil.
