W2504A: Multimedia Landscapes
FRIDAY April 25 (9:30 am to 4:00 pm)
$143.75
Both oil painters and acrylic painters can take part in this workshop
Course Description:
Playing With Shapes and Texture
This time, we’ll put down the brushes and paint an abstracted landscape with palette knives and shop towels, creating texture and random shapes while using a personal vocabulary for colour.
We’ll create a painting (or two) using a provided black and white photo for inspiration. Both oil painters and acrylic painters can take part in this workshop.
Oil painters will work with cold wax (not supplied) as part of their palette. Acrylic painters will work with their paints then embellish with supplied oil sticks.
Materials List:
Oil painters -
- paints - whatever you have! I prefer to work with a limited palette so if you bring a warm and cool version of red, blue and yellow along with white (Titanium or Zinc) and a toner (Payne’s Grey, Raw or Burnt Umber or even Dioxazine Purple), you’ll be good.
- a can of cold wax, brand doesn’t matter.
- canvas - whatever size you prefer to work with. If you want to use this class as an experimental workshop, then bring a few small canvases (8x10 or so) and you can try different colour combinations/different techniques. NOTE: you can use canvas however, when you add cold wax to the colour mix the paint might be prone to cracking on canvas. Cradle boards provide a stronger base. I’ve used both so if you only have canvas, don’t worry about it, we can make it work.
- palette knives - any shape or size as long as one of them is about 1/2 to 1 inch.
- a roll of blue shop towels - we’ll be painting with these
- vinyl gloves - we get messy
- notebook/sketchbook/drawing utensil (if you’d like to create some thumbnails, or take notes, before painting)
- roll of paper towels might come in handy
- anything else, personal to you, that you use to make your painting experience cozy and comfortable!
Prep your cradle boards or canvas with a couple of coats of white gesso (or black gesso if you’re feeling adventurous) before you come to the workshop.
Acrylic painters:
- Paints - the same as for oil painters. See above.

Prep your canvases with a gel medium (not soft gel medium) prior to the workshop. Use a palette knife to apply the gel. Apply like you’re icing a cake roughly, leaving several low ridges in the medium. This will aid in texture development. If you’re unsure how to do this, send me an email () and I’ll send you a short video of the prep. Also, please make sure the medium is dry before the class. (Speaking from experience!}
